John Sonntag is an excellent musician and will work your project like his own. From the start to end he attends to the details and knows how to communicate with his clients verbally and musically. The end result is always great sounding tracks.

It was in the spring of 2002 that John and I first got together to lay the ground work for my CD “Raised From The Dust.” Having had my previous CD “Workings of The Heart” recorded and released by a record company (Palmetto Records), I had no idea how to make an independence CD of my own. In retrospect I was blessed to have such a caring and talented producer- John Sonntag in my corner. He was able to connect all the dots necessary for a first rate recording. He suggested and brought in musicians when I had none, worked in alternative studios when the project needed it and refused to let me settle for anything but the best that I was capable of.

Due to my budgetary restraints my project took over a year but I never laughed so hard or had more fun in a studio. We were a bunch of middle-aged teenagers. Anyone can make a recording but making a world class album requires someone with great ears, top of the line equipment, and the technical know how to get the most out the gear. I’m glad for my music’s sake that John is a master of all of these.

With John, I feel my songs are in good hands. His skills as a musician, singer-songwriter and producer allow him to provide insight into all aspects of the recording process. John gives a lot of thought into each song and into understanding the sound you want. When needed he brings top – notch musicians in to get your song to the highest level. He has a way of pulling the best vocals from you and the best performances from the musicians. I am so happy with the quality of my songs.

I came to John and Thunder Pumpkin with a few good songs but no real studio experience, no idea of what goes on behind the scenes to create good recordings. John knows. He also understood the message and the emotions I’m trying to convey. I’ve come away with a collection of songs that sound great, as if they were recorded in New York, LA, or Nashville.

When I worked with John on Eve’s Lament, I walked into the studio with a suitcase full of songs and no idea what to do with them. John patiently waded through them with me, deciding which songs to include or not, which songs to tweak (or in some cases, write or re-write) and how to approach each one. Then he went to work treating each song as though it were his own, while never losing sight of the overall project, and always deferring to me for the final decision. Because of that, I knew those babies were in excellent hands — as he literally built up the sound booth around me (and he did – literally — build the sound booth in between takes at his Jersey City studio). We worked hard together, had a lot of laughs, and I wound up with an excellent product. If you are looking to create an authentic recording of original songs and to work with a producer who understands the whole shebang, I couldn’t recommend him more highly!
